Priority 1

My Home: People and Culture

Building the people, relationships, and shared culture that make everything else possible
Objective: Vilas School District will provide every student with an individualized learning pathway that connects their personal goals, interests, and strengths to real-world experiences and post-secondary success.
Strategic Priority OneMy Home: People and Culture
Why is this important?Students are more likely to engage, persist, and succeed when they feel known, valued, and connected to their learning and their school community. In a small district, Vilas has the opportunity to know each student deeply—their strengths, interests, goals, challenges, and aspirations—and use those relationships to create meaningful learning experiences.
A strong People & Culture foundation ensures that individualized learning is more than an academic strategy; it becomes part of how Vilas operates. Students develop ownership of their learning, build confidence and resilience, and understand how what they are learning connects to life beyond school. At the same time, strong relationships among students, staff, families, and the community create the trust necessary for students to take risks, explore new opportunities, and discover what success looks like for them.
Action steps related to the priority-Establish a consistent professional learning and coaching cycle focused on shared instructional practices, collaboration, and personalized learning.
-Develop shared expectations for school culture and instructional practice so staff have a common understanding of what the Vilas student experience should look like.
-Strengthen student leadership structures across grade levels and intentionally include student voice in school decisions.
-Create opportunities for older students to mentor and lead younger students, strengthening connection and belonging across the district.
-Strengthen structures that ensure every student has a trusted adult who knows their strengths, interests, goals, and needs.
-Increase meaningful family engagement and create structured opportunities for families to provide input and participate in the school community.
-Expand and formalize community partnerships that provide mentorship, enrichment, work-based learning, and other opportunities for students.
-Strengthen staff onboarding and mentoring so new employees understand Vilas’s mission, culture, expectations, and approach to serving students.
-Regularly gather student, staff, and family feedback to monitor school culture, belonging, relationships, and engagement and use the results for continuous improvement.
